Abortion

We oppose the practice of abortion which is the intentional killing of an unborn child, whether by drugs or surgical induction, from the time of conception.

Where the life of the mother is truly threatened by the continuation of pregnancy, we believe that all possible efforts to preserve the lives of both mother and child should be made. With modern health technology available in Australia today, it is virtually no longer necessary to have to make a decision to end pregnancy. In these rare cases, the death of the unborn child is foreseen but unintended.

We recognize that there may be occasions in which early labour needs to be induced or a caesarian section performed after viability to give both mother and baby the best chance of survival. We also oppose the use, in medical research or for any other reason, of tissue taken from the bodies of babies killed by induced abortion.

Euthanasia

We oppose the practice of euthanasia as it is the deliberate and intentional killing of a human being by a direct action, such as a lethal injection, or by the failure to perform even the most basic care

such as the provision of nutrition and hydration, or basic medical care, necessary to maintain life:

We oppose active intervention with the intent to produce considerations, or convenience of patient, family, or society.

death for the relief of suffering, economic

Euthanasia is not...

(a) the ceasing of medical treatment which is unwanted, or is imposing excessive

burdens on the patient, or is incapable of providing any benefit, or

(b) the use of drugs in doses sufficient to relieve very severe pain. Medical actions

intended to relieve suffering are ethical and lawful, as are the withdrawal of

treatments which are only unnecessarily prolonging dying. Though the patient

may later die of his/her terminal illness and though such death is foreseen, in

these situations death is not intended by what is done.

The role of the physician is to affirm human life, relieve suffering, and give compassionate,

competent care as long as the patient lives.
